Richard Hamilton
On our course “visual research methods” we were asked to
recreate Richard Hamilton collage of “Just what was it that made yesterday’s
homes so different, so appealing?1956.” So I decided to research into him and his
piece so I could make the most of this task. What I found out was he is way
overrated and a tad boring.
So he was born in 1922 died 2011. Got kicked out of an art
school to get into another one as per for most 20th century artists.
He was inspired by industrial and revolution. And likes contemporary art, print
making, carving and computer-generated work, in his later years. He was part of
the Independent Group, formed in the 1950s. Which I will talk about next week. Basically,
he was revolutionary of his time. In my opinion the YBAs are much cooler maybe
it because its more my age.
So one or Hamilton’s famous pieces, so much it has a sequel. "Just what was it that made yesterday’s homes so different, so appealing?" his collage and one of pop arts most famous
post war piece. It shows a man and woman in what he believed was the future
bases on his today. If that makes sense. He portrays us as self-image conscious
lazy tv alcoholics, who care about objects and image. He was 100% spot on. His mish match collage gives a messy but organised vibe which I like and
there are less obvious displays of the world which I appreciate and you would not
see at first glance. For instance the mars ceiling representing space travel. The
fully clothed woman cleaning the stairs which I can only guess is the maid representing
our laziness but also house pride.
And the sequel released in the 1990s keeping with the same theme
of how things had changed and are going to change. He kept the same objects man,
woman, humanity, history, food, newspapers, cinema, TV, telephone, comics,
words, tape recording, cars, domestic appliances, space. But created a different
vibe the room seams emptier and colder man has become less self-conscious and more
focused on providing for his family. The computer chip wallpaper and computer
tv and microwave represent how technology had advanced so fast.
I will take all these factors that he used and transferred in his updated version to my version.
